The Bloomington Election Commission continues to conduct hearings on challenges to nominating papers filed by Mayor Tari Renner and mayoral candidate Diana Hauman. Some of the challenges were considered during opening hearings at the Government Center Friday.

Bloomington resident Bruce Meeks challenged the petitions alleging they are invalid because of alleged improper notarization. Meeks says he believes this is a necessary discussion to have.

"I think it's very important for us to have this continue forward. I think the petitioners' pages should have been duly sworn, and that would be taking an oral oath," Meeks said.

He said he wants a fair hearing and believes this is a learning process for the candidates as well as the citizens of Bloomington. Meeks is also challenging nominating papers for incumbent Ward Five Alderman Joni Painter and Ward Three candidate J Balmer. The next hearings are scheduled for next Thursday.

Despite the ongoing process of the hearings, Hauman said she is not worried about remaining a candidate for the February primary.

"I'll be on the ballot in February. I actually have no concerns about that," Hauman said.

She added the procedures have been fairly straight forward and she respects anyone's right to object to a petition.
