UPDATED 5:35 p.m. | Virginia Avenue in Normal is closed at Camelback Bridge due to a collapse of a decorative timber truss.
The Normal Fire Department said Friday that Constitution Trail users should go around the bridge entirely until the bridge is deemed safe and the trail is reopened.
The Camelback Bridge carries Virginia Avenue over Constitution Trail. The failed bridge component was a decorative wooden truss and was not part of the vehicle load-bearing components of the bridge. The element was found to have failed as a result of rot in a wooden segment.
A structural engineer is evaluating the bridge for safety.
