Bloomington City Council member Jamie Mathy has announced plans to seek a second term on the council next year.
Mathy was appointed to the council in 2013 by then-mayor Steve Stockton. He later lost the seat when he ran as a write-in candidate.
He was elected to a four-year term in 2017.
Mathy represents Ward 1 that covers neighborhoods south and east of downtown.
Mathy said he has unfinished business on the council and has set infrastructure improvements and economic development as two of his priorities.
“We are working hard to make improvements to our infrastructure, but it took 40 years to get into this mess and it’s going to take a while longer to get out of it,” he said.
Recently, Mathy spearheaded an effort for the city council to adopt a modified downtown master plan that the council previously abandoned.
He said he hopes to use his background in technology to help develop a more comprehensive approach to technology, business and research through the Bloomington-Normal Innovation Alliance, a partnership involving Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University and other community groups.
Mathy and his wife, Kelly, own two Bloomington businesses, Red Racoon Games and The Decorator’s Grocery.
Council seats in wards 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and the mayor's office will be on the ballot next April. No one else has declared their candidacy for Mathy's seat.
