The Illinois State University women’s basketball team picked up a win Friday and didn’t have to take the floor.The Evansville Purple Aces announced hours before the game’s scheduled 4 p.m. start at Redbird Arena they would forfeit the game, though the school did not give specifics.
“In consultation with medical professionals associated with the program, the University of Evansville women’s basketball team is unable to play this afternoon’s game at Illinois State and will forfeit the contest,” the team said in a statement.
The pandemic has caused countless postponements and cancellations this college basketball season as programs try to limit their exposure to the coronavirus.
Five ISU women’s games have been canceled this season.
The Redbird women defeated Evansville, 73-48, on Thursday. The Purple Aces have not won a Missouri Valley Conference game this season in seven tries.
ISU’s record improves to 8-3.
The Redbird women will host Bradley at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The Redbird men are scheduled to play two home games this weekend against Valparaiso that were postponed previouslydue to a COVID-19 outbreak in Valparaiso's basketball program.
