Tenants in an apartment building on Bloomington's west side escaped flames Sunday night without injury, according to the fire department.

Fire gutted a 20-unit apartment building Sunday evening on Bloomington's west side, with the Bloomington Fire Department saying the Red Cross is helping 36 tenants find other places to live.

No one was injured in the blaze. A cat suffered non-life threatening smoke inhalation, said BFD spokesman Eric Davison.

A tenant called the fire department about 7:51 p.m. and reported seeing flames on the first floor of the Traditions of Bloomington complex on Reeveston Drive between the Hampton Inn and the Marcus  Wehrenberg Bloomington Cinema.

Davison said when firefighters arrived, the fire had spread to the second floor and was into the attic.

Firefighters said they ran a lot of hose as they tried to put out flames in a building at the 'Traditions of Bloomington' apartment complex.

Davison projected the building as a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation
