Dave Leonatti

Dave Leonatti is an architect, freelance writer and self-professed music nut based in Springfield. He wrote music and performing arts reviews for the State Journal-Register. Dave started the Nightsounds program in the late 1980's.

Dave is a musician--he's played bass, guitar and drums in several rock and bluegrass bands. He plays bass for the NPR Illinois All-Star Band, "The Pitch Patio Pickers," with Mark Mathewson and Jennifer Ramm, the host of Bluegrass Breakdown.

I wanted to get something out there for the best of jazz albums for 2020, since we launched Nightsounds Jazz in October.  Seek these out and I will expand this offering in 2021

I will resist saying it’s been a year like any other – that goes without saying.  But there was a tremendous outpouring of stellar music – pandemic-centric or not:

Kathleen Edwards  -  Total Freedom

About damn time, quitter.

The former critics darling, then abandoner of the music business (she started her own shop called ‘Quitters Coffee’ in Stittsville, Ontario) returns after a near decade absence.

Here are mighty fine albums and great songs we shared during the year....in no particular order.

Crane Like the Bird          “Crane Like the Bird”

Drummer Kyle Crane (having backed such luminaries as Neko Case and M Ward) assembles an all-star cast of contributors for this debut of propulsive pop-rock.  Make no mistake, this is not a star turn showcase, but each guest readily lends exactly the right emotion and mood in each composition.
