About 92% of District 87 teachers, staff and administrators who responded to a survey say they have received the COVID-19 vaccine, or are in the process of getting vaccinated. Close to 60% of staff have responded to the survey.
Superintendent Barry Reilly said he's pleased with the response to vaccinations, adding it could mean fully reopened schools by fall — even though many COVID protocols will likely remain in place.
Reilly initially expressed concern some learning remote may be necessary because it may take time for students to get the COVID vaccine and their regular school-mandated immunizations.
The CDC has since issued guidance that adolescents can get the COVID vaccinesalong with the regular school-mandated immunizations at the same time.
Reilly said it will be up to the Illinois Department of Public Health to decide if students will need to get the COVID-19 vaccine, but he doubts it will be a requirement for the fall semester.
The FDA has expanded its emergency authorization for the Pfizer vaccine to include 12-to-15 year-olds.
