Chissell Announces Bloomington City Council Run

Alderman David Sage, left, and Bloomington City Council candidate Georgene Chissell.

A local business owner said Wednesday she’s running for Bloomington City Council in 2019—at least the third candidate to announce with more than 250 days until the election.

Georgene Chissell will run for council in Ward 2 in southwest Bloomington. Alderman David Sage has held that seat since 2007.

Chissell is a Democratic precinct committeeman. She owns Bloomington-based Divine Cleaning Services of Central Illinois and serves on the city’s Historic Preservation Commission.

In a statement Wednesday, Chissell said she “understands the broad needs, objectives, and challenges of Twin Citians, especially in Ward 2.” She told GLT her key issues would be revitalizing downtown and creating more green space and parks in Ward 2.

“Community is important,” Chissell said. “I want to hear what's on your mind, Ward 2. I want to live in a clean community. What's on your mind? Let's work together. We can do anything together. I want Ward 2 to know the facts.”

Chissell said Sage has been inconsistent with his responsiveness to constituents. She said she had a good experience with him once when she sought help as president of her condo association. But she said he never got back to her on another matter.

"We need someone in that position that's for the people and available to the people," said Chissell. "I can be and will be available to the citizens."

It’s unclear if Sage will seek re-election in 2019. He was not immediately available for comment Wednesday.

Wards 4, 6, and 8 are also up for re-election in 2019. Aldermen Amelia Buragas (Ward 4) and Karen Schmidt (Ward 6) have not announced their plans. Alderman Diana Hauman (Ward 8) will not seek re-election. McLean County Board member Josh Barnett will run in Ward 8. Community organizer Jenn Carrillo, who works for YWCA McLean County, is running in Ward 6.
