Registered Nurse Announces Run For McLean County Coroner As Democrat

McLean County Democrats

A Bloomington-Normal nurse has announced her candidacy for McLean County coroner.

Abbi Sorrells plans to run as a Democrat against incumbent Coroner Kathy Yoder, a Republican who has held the role since 2014.

Sorrells said if elected, she wants to make the role more known in the community.

“When we're seeing the coroner's office or the staff in the coroner's office, it's not the greatest of circumstances,” said Sorrells, a veteran with the Illinois Army National Guard. "And it would be really nice to have familiar faces who have been there for a while to comfort you, to talk to you during this difficult time.”

Sorrells said she considered running for the office in 2016, but decided to wait as she was not yet far along in her studies.

The 35-year-old RN has experience in critical care and emergency nursing and is currently finishing her master’s degree. She said her broad experience background will be beneficial.

“I'm very comfortable working with a super diverse population, which I think McLean County has,” she said. “So I definitely think I bring that experience of diversity to the table.”

Yoder was appointed coroner in 2014 and elected to a four-year term in 2016. She announced her re-election campaign last month.
