A Bloomington Police officer walks away from a moped which was involved in a crash with an SUV on Thursday afternoon.

A child riding a moped was struck by a vehicle on East Empire Street near the Illinois Wesleyan University campus on Thursday afternoon, according to Bloomington Police.
The department provided few details after the crash. BPD said the child, who was under age 10, was riding the moped northbound on Evans Street when it collided with a westbound SUV shortly before 5:30 p.m.

Police said the child was immediately taken to a local hospital, but they aren't describing the extent of the child's injuries. The driver of the SUV was unhurt.

Bloomington Police closed Empire Street from Clinton to McLean streets as they gathered evidence and took photographs from the scene. The road reopened around 7:30 p.m.

Police said they would issue more information as it becomes available.
