McLean County Reports 2 COVID Deaths

The McLean County Health Department announced 51 new COVID-19 cases on Friday.

McLean County reported two more COVID-related deaths on Friday to bring the county’s death toll to 177.The McLean County Health Department (MCHD) said the deaths involved two men not associated with long-term care. One was in his 70s and the other was in his 80s. They are the first two COVID-related deaths the county has reported in nine days.

Friday marks one year since the county recorded its first coronavirus case. The county is now approaching 15,000 cases with the addition of 51 new confirmed and probable cases.

“Since then, one thing that has been a constant is that anything can change at a moment’s notice during a pandemic,” the health department said in a statement.

The rate of new coronavirus cases has started to rise again, topping 200 weekly cases for the first time since mid-February. The department said 236 people are isolating at home while 14,539 people have been released from quarantine and are considered recovered.

MCHD said 23 McLean County residents remain hospitalized with COVID-19. That number is unchanged since last week. Eighty-one percent of Bloomington-Normal hospital beds are full and 77% of ICU beds are occupied. Those hospitals currently have seven COVID patients.

The county’s rolling testing positivity rate topped 3% for the first time since Feb. 22at 3.1%. The county’s cumulative positivity rate stands at 5.7%, based on more than 263,700 tests conducted since the start of the pandemic.

COVID vaccines

Nearly 54,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered in McLean County and 19,572 people have received both vaccine doses. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), 11.3% of the county’s population is fully vaccinated, compared with the state average of 12.9%.
