David Culhane reports from Paris on today's French tribute to the victims of a terrorist bombing attack one year ago. An explosion in a city train station killed eight people and wounded nearly one-hundred others. It was blamed on Algerian Islamic extremists and marked the beginning of a series of terrorist attacks. Today, the great bell at Notre Dame Cathedral rang in memory as people left flowers near the site of the explosion.

NPR's David Welna reports on the grassroots uprising in a small town just south of Mexico City. What started as a revolt against plans for a fancy golf course grew into a takeover of the town of Tepoztlan (tay-post-LAWN). The people built barricades to keep the police out and held their own elections for local leaders. The state government has cut off the town's funds. The rebellion has become a symbol of growing impatience with Mexico's ruling party.

A visit to one of the center's of African filmmaking - Ouaguadougou [wah-gah-DOO-goo] in the West African state of Burkina Faso. Though the city hosts one of the largest film festivals in the world, the government of Burkina Faso can only finance one or two films a year. Jennifer Ludden reports that's typical on a continent where, like everywhere else, American action flicks dominate.

NPR's David Baron profiles a community where a woman was killed by a mountain lion. There have been several lion sightings in the Sierra Nevada foothills recently, even in some of the new subdivisions. Yet for many who've moved there from cities, it's part of living close to nature. Newcomers are more worried about a proposed new Wal-Mart than being attacked.

NPR's Anne Garrels reports that in an effort to keep the Republic of Chechnya in its fold... Russian forces have destroyed much of the capital city of Grozny and laid waste to the rest of the republic. Life in Grozny, is difficult for both Chechens and Russians who live in the region. Even the Chechens who earlier may not have wanted to go to war with Russia are now so bitter about the destruction of their homes that they see no resolution to the conflict but complete independence from Moscow.

NPR's Tom Gjelten reports from Sarajevo that the city is whole again. Grbavica ((gur-buh-VEE-tsuh)), the last of five suburbs, has been returned from Serb control to the Muslim-Croat Federation. Today's hand-over was more orderly than the others. However, Muslims returning to the suburb they'd left four years ago found buildings and homes devesated by fires set by departing Serb arsonists.

A report released by the FBI yesterday says the nation's crime rate is down this year. Large cities have had the most significant drop in crime, while rural areas have experienced a slight increase. NPR's Cheryl Corley reports that the Justice Department attributes the falling crime rates to improved community policing efforts, but some criminologists say its difficult to pinpoint the reasons for the drop in crime.
