Illinois State University is cutting its men’s tennis program after the spring 2026 semester.
Illinois State Athletics Director Jeri Beggs said in a news release that the decision followed a “thorough analysis” evaluating a number of factors.
“Decisions like this are never easy and it’s with a heavy heart that we make this announcement," Beggs said. "Our men’s tennis student-athletes have represented the University well on and off the court, often setting the standard for academic achievement among all 19 sports."
The announcement came after the team’s season ended April 24 at the Summit League Championships. The team finished the 2026 season with a 9-14 record and exited in the semifinals for the third consecutive year.
Because the program will end in the spring semester, current student-athletes will have an opportunity to consider the transfer portal, which opens May 4. Five of the eight roster members are seniors.
Scholarships for remaining student-athletes will be honored if they stay at Illinois State. They will also have continued access to several supports offered to student-athletes, including mental health services, nutrition support and athletic training.
Head coach Maja Kovacek will continue to lead the women’s tennis program. She had been coaching both teams for the past year, following 11 seasons coaching the women's program.
Kovacek led the Redbird women to a Missouri Valley Conference team championship in 2026.
