Highway 309 LIVE celebrates the blues with Mississippi Heat and honors Delta Frank Black

WGLT Highway 309 LIVE returns with a show Sept. 20 at the Normal Theater, featuring Mississippi Heat. It's a tribute to the blues honor Delta Frank Black.

Highway 309 LIVE returns Wednesday, Sept. 20, for another show in the series at the Normal Theater.

WGLT will celebrate its blues heritage and pay tribute to longtime host “Delta” Frank Black, the Blues Doctor, who died in 2020. Black was a larger-than-life figure at WGLT from 1985 until he retired in 2013.

Black is famous for his lively listener conversations, memorable sayings, and tall-tales. Some of Frank’s greatest hits and a remembrance will take place at 7:15 p.m.

Chicago-based Mississippi Heat will headline the evening at 7:30 p.m. Led by harmonica master and songwriter Pierre Lacocque, Mississippi Heat features traditional blues with a unique sound. The world-class Chicago blues band’s name is a reflection of Lacocque’s reverence for Mississippi blues culture and music. The band’s conviction is there is no deeper music than the Delta-inspired blues to express what lies in everyone’s soul.

Delta Frank was famous for saying, “If you don’t like the blues, you have a hole in your soul,” and Mississippi Heat will be a fitting tribute to the legendary Blues Doctor.

Event is free and open to all ages. Contributions in honor of Delta Frank can be made at WGLT.org/Donate.
