Rivian and Lincoln went public with plans for a luxury EV just three months ago.

UPDATED 5:50 p.m. | The Lincoln Motor Co. said Tuesday it will not proceed with development of a new electric vehicle based on Rivian's skateboard platform, citing "the current environment."

Rivian and Lincoln went public with plans for a luxury EV just three months ago. Since then, the coronavirus has abruptly shut down economies—and Rivian facilities—across the globe. The pandemic has also delayed Rivian's own vehicle launches.

"Given the current environment, Lincoln and Rivian have decided not to pursue the development of a fully electric vehicle based on Rivian’s skateboard platform," Lincoln said in a statement Tuesday. "Ford Motor Co.'s strategic commitment to Lincoln, Rivian and electrification remains unchanged, and Lincoln’s future plans will include an all-electric vehicle consistent with its Quiet Flight DNA."

The project was part of the $500 million investment announced in April 2019 by Lincoln’s parent company, Ford.

"Ford and Lincoln continue to remain great partners with Rivian," said Rivian spokesperson Zach Dietmeier. "This cancellation has had no impact on plant construction."

Rivian already has 328 employees based in Normal, with plans to hire hundreds more as production ramps up. The company plans to invest $750 million in its Normal plant.
