Unit 5 schools have been getting ready for Tuesday's FDA approval of the Pfizer vaccine for kids ages 5-11 with superintendent Kristen Weikle saying there are plans for vaccination clinics.

"We are working, of course, with our community partners in the health department, but also with Carle to be able to provide some voluntary vaccination clinics for families who choose to have their 5-11-year-old receive the vaccine," Weikle told WGLT's Sound Ideas.

Although overall COVID cases have declined in McLean County in recent months, youth cases have risen, and some health experts think the pandemic will not end until children also are vaccinated.

Weikle said based on feedback she's received, she thinks a large portion of the nearly 6,758 students in kindergarten through sixth grade will get the vaccine.

"The parents I have spoken to and received emails from, not all, but a large number have expressed interest in having their child or children receive the vaccine, once it's available," said Weikle.

Weikle said opportunities for adult Unit 5 staff to get booster shots are coming as well.
