Rivian is greenlighting a $30.4 million expansion of a warehouse on Kerrick Road.

Rivian is continuing planned growth in Normal by greenlighting a $30.4 million expansion of a warehouse on Kerrick Road.

Rivian spokesperson Maura Freeman said that will double the size of the existing warehouse the company leases from Phoenix Industries. A building permit filed with the Town of Normal showed a 500,000-square-foot addition is planned. PJ Hoerr in Normal is the general contractor on the project.

"We are excited to continue growing in Normal. Normal is our hometown. It's our base of manufacturing operations and we're excited to continue producing vehicles here at our home in Normal," said Freeman.

Two years ago, Rivian had said it's intention was to pick up the option to expand the warehouse when needed. Freeman said the company will use the addition to expand Rivian's logistics, warehouse space, and some of the company's adventure products.

Freeman continues its hiring spree as well, adding more than 2,000 workers in the last six months.

"As of March 31, it was 5,075 people employed in the Normal manufacturing operations. We'll be continuing to grow and that number will rise accordingly," said Freeman.

Rivian has vaulted past Illinois State University to become the second largest employer in the Bloomington-Normal community.
