One man is dead and another is hospitalized following a crash and vehicle fire early Sunday morning.

Bloomington Police responded to the 1800 block of Springfield Road in South Bloomington around 3:30 a.m. Sunday following a report of a single-vehicle crash. According to a statement issued by Bloomington Police on Monday, the driver was seen fleeing the scene. Bloomington Fire Department was dispatched after a report of the car catching fire.

Officials found Travaye D. Clayton, 27, of Bloomington, in the front passenger seat after the fire was extinguished. The McLean County Coroner’s Office pronounced him dead at the scene.

The cause of death is listed as inhalation injuries and thermal burns related to a post-crash fire. A toxicology report is pending.

Officers working with a K-9 Unit located the injured driver several hundred yards from the scene of the crash. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police cited the driver with failing to remain at the scene of a fatal crash, aggravated reckless driving, improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

The driver’s identity has not been released.
