The price tag to remove asbestos from the Normal Public Library and renovate the facility in Uptown is now up to $5.1 million.
Normal Library Trustees on Monday will consider whether to approve the bid from the firm Broeren Russo for a major remodel of the library and removal of cancer-causing asbestos that is flaking off interior beams. Air quality tests show no current danger to the public.
The base bid is just under $2.7 million, but library staff are recommending several optional additions to get to the $5.1 million total.
The library foundation has also signed a letter of intent to kick in $250,000 for a special project such as a maker space and 3D printer as an add-on.
“We are committed to Normal Public Library through fundraising, advocacy, and programs because we believe that our community library is essential to a strong community,” wrote foundation President Lyn Potts.
The library would pay for the project using $4.75 million in reserves and up to $2 million in debt that will be worked into the tax levy over 10 years.
It is likely the library will have to close during the renovation and abatement of asbestos.
