The Bloomington Fire Department battled high winds to contain an apartment fire at 1311 N. Hershey Road on Monday night.

The Bloomington Fire Department says multiple people were displaced from an apartment fire on the city’s east side on Monday.

According to a news release from the fire department, crews were called to 1311 N. Hershey Road at 8:40 p.m. for a fire in one of the apartment units.

One tenant reported smoke near a sink cabinet. Another tenant reported light smoke coming from a first-floor balcony.

The fire department determined through the use of a thermal imaging camera that the fire was concealed in the ceiling of a first-floor apartment and was on several levels of the building, as high winds helped the fire spread to the attic.

Everyone was out of the building by the time crews arrived, according to the fire department’s public information officer Frank Friend.

Crews brought the fire under control by 10:30 p.m. and remained on scene until 4 a.m. putting out hot spots, according to Friend.

The department says no one was injured in the fire and the cause is under investigation.

Friend says the Red Cross helped the displaced tenants and Connect Transit provided a bus to give them shelter while fire crews worked to contain the fire.
