After a lengthy closure, Bloomington's Miller Park Zoo will soon reopen the indoor viewing area inside Katthoefer Animal Building to visitors.
The building was closed in March 2020 due to concerns about the vulnerability of certain animals to COVID-19.
According to the zoo’s director, Jay Pratte, the decision to close the building was made in consultation with veterinary experts and city officials. The zoo has since made changes to ensure the safety of both animals and visitors.
The changes include the installation of industrial fans and electrical upgrades. The zoo also has cleaned and repaired the building after an emergency event last fall. Additionally, animals in the building have been vaccinated against COVID-19 through a program offered by Zoetis.
The Katthoefer Animal Building [KAB] will reopen on July 31 for Miller Park Zoological Society members and Aug. 1 for all visitors.
“Over the past few months, through the support of the city , the Miller Park Zoological Society, and the efforts of zoo staff, we have made several changes in the KAB in order to open the interior viewing space once again,” said Pratte.
Visitors will be able to see animals such as gibbons, langurs, bats, and other animals in the reopened building.
