A political newcomer said Friday he’s running for the Ward 1 city council seat in Bloomington.
Benjamin "Ben" Zimmerman said he is a lifelong Central Illinois resident, who has lived in the city's Blooming Grove area since 2005 and the South Hill neighborhood before that. He has lived in Bloomington since 1999.
In a news release, Zimmerman said he is running because of "a deep sense of duty and a willingness to serve," adding his "upbringing emphasized service to others and respect for community."
He said public safety, infrastructure, homelessness, and the financial impact on taxpayers are key issues for him.
“It’s important that local elected officials listen to the people,” said Zimmerman. “I’m here to be an open ear and a responsive voice for Ward 1 residents.”
Zimmerman is an IT consultant with HCL Tech. He said he also has worked at State Farm.
“I will advocate for practical solutions and greater transparency, with focus on making Bloomington a safe and thriving place for all,” said Zimmerman.
The current Ward 1 council member is Jenna Kearns who also has filed nominating petitions, said in 2023 her top priorities were housing and infrastructure.
The close of business on Monday is the deadline to file petitions for the April 2025 consolidated election.
