The main building of the Normal Public Library will reopen to the public July 25 after closing in March 2024 for a $6.5 million asbestos removal and renovation project.
To facilitate a smooth transition, there will be limited services at Normal's temporary library — housed across the street in a former Busey Bank branch — beginning July 18 and ending on opening day. Access to the temporary and main facility, prize pickup for the Summer Reading Challenge, and any technological access will be unavailable. Staff will also be available by phone at (309) 452-1757.
All off-site programming, outreach events and visits will happen as scheduled during that stretch of time. Additionally, curbside hold pickup will be available at the main building.
Although doors reopen July 25, select areas of the building will be unavailable as they await technology and furniture that's yet to arrive. These spaces include the used book sale, all-ages makerspace, the Board Room, and the Community Room.
The renovations will add new lighting, flooring, and furniture. For the younger visitors, the Children's Discovery Room has received new additions, and there are new spaces like a nursing lounge and the all-ages makerspace.
Further details for reopening are available to the public.
