McLean County prosecutors have charged a 17-year-old boy from Bloomington with first-degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting on Thursday night.
The teen, who was arrested Friday and sent to the McLean County Juvenile Detention Facility, is being charged as an adult for the alleged murder of Darius Floyd, 35, of Bloomington.
According to documents presented in McLean County court on Saturday, Bloomington Police were called to the 1700 block of West Illinois Street, part of the Sunnyside Housing Complex in west Bloomington shortly after 11:30 p.m. Thursday for a report of a man who had been shot in the head.
Prosecutors say the teen told investigators he was holding a gun for Floyd, and Floyd called because he wanted the gun returned. The teen said he met up with Floyd, who became angry with him, took a semi-automatic pistol from him and put the weapon in the teen’s back. The teen said he feared for his life and pulled his gun, a 9mm handgun, and shot Floyd.
Floyd was pronounced dead at Carle BroMenn Medical Center early Friday morning, according to McLean County Coroner Kathy Yoder.
Bloomington Police said they used public safety surveillance cameras to identify a vehicle that left the area shortly before officers were dispatched to the shooting. Police said they spoke with the driver who told them she took the teen to a location in the 1400 block of West Wood Street.
According to prosecutors, police said they found the two weapons at that location along with a switch, a device that enables a gun to operate as fully automatic.
The teen faces with four counts of first-degree murder, one count of unlawful use of weapons, two counts of invalid FOID registration and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm.
