Bloomington business family matriarch Linda Shirk passes away

The matriarch of a prominent Bloomington-Normal business family has died. Linda Shirk was 79.

The Shirk family and Linda's husband Jim owns and runs Beer Nuts, an iconic nationwide brand of snacks, and is known for philanthropy that includes the Shirk Center athletic complex at Illinois Wesleyan University.

Linda Shirk was active in various community organizations including the McLean County Arts Center, the David Davis Mansion and Foundation, and the McLean County Historical Society.

Her family dates back to the Mayflower landing in the U.S.

Linda Shirk has four children and nine grandchildren.

"All would agree she was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother," her obituary read.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 19 at Second Presbyterian Church in Bloomington, followed by a private burial.

The family is hosting a Celebration of Life open house at their home from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the following day.
