A pedestrian has died after being struck by a vehicle on Veterans Parkway on Wednesday night.
It happened around 7:10 p.m. Wednesday on Veterans between Oakland Avenue and Lincoln Street, Bloomington Police said. The man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died. The McLean County coroner has not yet released the man's name.
This latest pedestrian death on Veterans Parkway comes as the Regional Planning Commission is conducting a study on re-designing the thoroughfare to increase safety. The crash happened at the same time a public feedback session was taking place as part of that study.
The commission has noted the rate of pedestrian incidents on Veterans Parkway is significantly higher than elsewhere in the community. Over the past decade, Veterans Parkway has been the site of more than 75 serious crashes, resulting in life-altering injuries or fatalities, said the commission. The study will go to the Illinois Department of Transportation, which has jurisdiction over changes to the road.
The McLean County Accident Reconstruction Team is participating in the investigation. The motorist stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.
