Bloomington Police have joined an investigation into what led to a house fire where two people were found dead Wednesday morning.

It happened around 7:30 a.m. in a home in the 1200 block of Eastholme Avenue, near Empire Street and a few blocks east of Constitution Trail, authorities said. Two people were found dead in a portion of the home that was not directly affected by the fire, Bloomington Fire officials said.

Their names and causes of death have not yet been released.

“This was a relatively small fire in terms of size, but the loss of life makes it a heartbreaking tragedy,” said Bloomington Fire Capt. Frank Friend. "We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of those affected. Our thoughts are with them during this incredibly difficult time."

The exact cause of the fire and the cause of death remain under investigation. The Bloomington Police Department responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. Also involved are the coroner's office and Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office.

Fire officials said "severe hoarding conditions" inside the home created "significant challenges" in fighting the fire. The home sustained smoke and water damage, with the most significant fire damage located in the living room and extending into the dining area, officials said.

Fatal fires are uncommon in Bloomington-Normal, though this is the second such incident this month. Edder Diaz, 13, of Normal, suffered fatal injuries in a fire at a mobile home in Normal on Nov. 2.

Fire officials said Wednesday's "incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of fire safety in every home. The Bloomington Fire Department urges all residents to ensure they have working smoke alarms installed on every level of their home and outside sleeping areas."

“Working smoke alarms provide critical early warning and can mean the difference between life and death,” Friend said.
