A LeRoy man has been convicted a second time by a Champaign County jury connected to a sexual assault while he was an officer with the University of Illinois Police Department.

In 2022, Jerald E. Sandage, 54, was sentenced to five years in prison for official misconduct. Prosecutors said he used police records to gain information on women, including one who accused him of drugging and assaulting her.

An appeals court threw out the conviction, saying investigators improperly obtained evidence in the case. The court released Sandage from prison; he's been detained in Champaign County Jail waiting for the lower court to retry him on criminal sexual assault charges.

After a two-day trial, a jury again convicted Sandage on Wednesday.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 12.
