A McLean County judge has sentenced a Bloomington man to 26 years in prison for his role in a drunk driving crash that killed his girlfriend.

Judge Don Knapp handed down the sentence for 26-year-old Michael Mitchell, who pleaded guilty in February to four felony counts in connection with the November 2024 crash.

Chakquia Echols, 27, of Normal died in the crash. She was a passenger in one of the two vehicles involved. The driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Mitchell had reached a plea agreement with McLean County prosecutors. He pleaded guilty to failure to report an accident or death, unlawful use of weapons by a felon and two counts of aggravated drunk driving.

Prosecutors dropped reckless homicide and other charges in the plea agreement.
