Notify Normal, the Town of Normal’s free mass communication system, relaunched this week through a new contracted platform provider Everbridge. The system sends messages to residents who enroll regarding weather emergencies, public safety, road closures, community event information and more via text, email and phone calls.
Notify Normal was deactivated in late 2025 after systems were compromised at CodeRED — the previous platform provider.
In a press release, Normal City Manager Pamela Reece said residents and community members appreciate the versatile messages that allow them to stay aware of all things happening within Normal.
“The system alerts users in emergencies,” Reece said. “Our experience suggests users also appreciate messages about road closures and event information. We’re excited to reactivate Notify Normal to provide another avenue for sharing information with residents.”
Notify Normal can also send emergency alerts through the Integrated Public Alert Warning System [IPAWS], the national system for local emergency alerts. In the case of emergencies that pose an imminent threat to life and/or personal safety, IPAWS will send emergency alerts to mobile devices located within the boundary limits of the Town of Normal, no matter individual enrollment status.
Messages can also target specific geographical areas or streets in the Town of Normal.
Notification customization
In addition to emergency messages, users can decide what situations they receive notifications about, such as:
- Events: Information about community events such as Day of Play, Make Music Normal, Sweet Corn Circus and more.
- Services: Updates on Town of Normal services such as boil orders, garbage pickup, hydrant flushing, snow removal, etc.
- Streets: Insights on road conditions or closures along with parking bans, construction and other updates.
- Parks: Status updates regarding aquatic centers, the Constitution Trail, Parks & Recreation programing and parks.
Enrollment
Community members can enroll through the Notify Normal Member Portal or by texting “Normal” to 888777 to receive the link to the member portal.
Residents can also enroll as a guest to receive abbreviated text-only messages no longer than 140 characters.
