Systemic internet outages in Bloomington-Normal ended by 1 a.m. Thursday, according to fiberoptic service provider Metronet.
Metronet customers began reporting loss of service before 7 a.m. Wednesday.
In a statement, the company said severe storms damaged multiple fiber routes serving the Bloomington-Normal area, resulting in the disruption.
"Our teams are working closely with our network partners to repair the damage and restore service as quickly and safely as possible," said Metronet Wednesday afternoon.
Some Twin City businesses resorted to cash-only transactions because they were unable to connect to credit card services. Other businesses reported larger than usual attendance at work sites where internet service was stable because the outages are preventing work-from-home arrangements. One public cultural institution accepted Venmo and cash as a stopgap for entry.
