GLT's Grow: Finding Inspiration On The ISU Campus

Fell Hall on ISU campus
Illinois State University
Hoping to find a new tree for your yard? Let the ISU campus be a source of inspiration for your choice.

The wonderful array of plantings on the Illinois State University campus can provide inspiration for new landscaping ideas in your yard.

  • ISU's campus is home to many native trees, including the White Oak. There's about 360 trees on the Quad alone.
  • One advantage of visitng the Quad to check out the plantings is that you can see examples of a particular tree in early stages, midgrowth, and fully grown, all yards from each other. That way you can decide for yourself if that particular plant is going to work in your space.
  • Nearly all the trees on campus are tagged, so you can easily find the name of a tree that might capture your fancy.
  • Some of the trees that you'd find include the Catalpa, which was the favorite tree of Jesse Fell, who founded Illinois State University. You can find Chinese Catalpa and Northen Catalpa on the Quad.
  • You'll also find several examples of Dogwood, plus four different kinds of Buckeyes.
  • Studying trees and how they relate to each other in the landscape can help you decide how a particular plant will work for you in your yard.
