State Police said the driver who died was Cory Geist, 25, of Tucson, Ariz.

Illinois State Police say one person was killed in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning on Interstate 55.

The crash happened around 1:50 a.m. near LaGrange Road at milepost 146 near McLean when a box truck and semi-tractor trailer collided in the southbound lanes of the interstate.

Police said the semi pulled off onto the shoulder of I-55 because of a faulty headlight. After checking the truck tractor, the driver pulled back on to the interstate without gaining any speed on the shoulder. The box truck driver then rear-ended the semi.

The driver of the box truck was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. On Wednesday morning, state police identified the driver as 25-year-old Cody Geist of Tucson, Ariz.

Police initially said the semi driver was transported to a local hospital. Authorities on Wednesday said the driver and a passenger in the semi were not hurt.

The semi driver, Issa Mohomed, 39, of Salt Lake City, Utah, was charged with violating minimum speed regulations, failure to yield to merging traffic, and improper lane usage.

State Police closed I-55 southbound lanes for about five hours following the crash.

Police have not provided additional details about the crash.
