Officials say property owners in much of McLean County have been sent incorrect information about their property’s value due to a printing error. It’s at least the second substantial mistake involving property taxes in McLean County this year.
Property owners recently began receiving notices of values, the first step in the property tax cycle for taxes due in 2026. A property’s assessed value is one of the ingredients that determines your property tax bill.
However, the printing error means people are opening their mailboxes and seeing notices filled with incorrect information.
“Due to an error in the printing process, assessment notices from the McLean County Supervisor of Assessments dated August 28, 2025 were erroneously sent to incorrect addresses. Property owners in the following townships are affected: Anchor, Blue Mound, Chenoa, Cropsey, Danvers, Dry Grove, Empire, Gridley, Hudson, Lawndale, Lexington, Martin, Normal, Randolph, Towanda, White Oak, and Yates,” McLean County Clerk Kathy Michael said on Facebook, quoting a message she said she received from Chief County Assessment Officer Timothy Jorczak.
Jorczak told WGLT that he and his staff reviewed proofs from this mailing before it went out, and they were accurate at that time.
"Whenever we publish in the newspaper or send out a bulk mailing, we receive a proof copy to approve. My staff and I review these proofs to make sure all of the information is correct, including checking addresses, assessment data, etc., and verifying things like the QR code to pick up any kinds of errors," Jorczak said. "What we know right now is that this error happened after we reviewed and verified the correct proofs."
McLean County Board Chair Elizabeth Johnston also pointed to “an error at the printer.” She said “we are working with the printer to rectify the mis-print!”
“All proof-reading showed correct information but at the printer parcels were incorrectly assigned to addresses,” Johnston said on Facebook.
Jorczak, the chief assessor, said he's spoken "with our mail vendor to discuss what exactly happened and how they can resolve this. New notices with correct information will be going out as quickly as possible, considering the holiday weekend and the Postal Service schedule."
While you wait, you can access your correct property information online. You can also contact the assessor's office directly at (309) 888-5130 and they will walk you through the process, as well as providing information on filing a complaint if you choose.
The assessor's office is also hosting property tax information sessions in September where taxpayers can ask questions and get more information:
- Sept. 4, LeRoy: Living Well United Center, 209 West Washington Street, 6 p.m.
- Sept. 8, Lexington: Lexington Community Center, 207 West Main Street, 6 p.m.
- Sept. 16, Normal: Normal Community Activity Center, 1110 Douglas Street, 6 p.m.
Earlier this year, the McLean County treasurer’s office mailed corrected tax bills to property owners in the Olympia and Ridgeview school districts where tax rates were incorrectly calculated. In both cases, lower tax rates were calculated, leaving the school districts to brace for an unexpected drop in revenue.
