A Chicago area man was killed in a crash that shut down Interstate 55 traffic north of Towanda for about five hours on Monday.

State Police said a vehicle driven by a 64-year-old man from Berkeley swerved onto the right shoulder of southbound I-55 about two miles north of Towanda shortly after 4:30 p.m.

Police said the vehicle drove under the back of a flat bed on a tow truck that responded to an unrelated accident.

The Berkeley man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released, pending family notification. Police said a passenger in the vehicle, a 25-year-old man from Berkeley, was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police rerouted southbound traffic on to U.S. Route 66 at Lexington for hours.
