Wind farm boosts McLean County property values

McLean County's taxable assessed property value rose by $143 million last year.

County treasurer Rebecca McNeil said the growth largely came from the addition of the Bloomington Grove Wind Farm. There are now five wind farms on county rolls that pay a combined $9.4 million in property taxes.

Total assessed taxable property in McLean County is now $4.183 billion, up 3.4%, generated by roughly 68,000 parcels of taxable property, McNeil said.

Total property tax just billed to landowners in the county is $375.7 million, up 3.19% from the previous year, representing an increase of $11.6 million. Though there are more than 200 taxing bodies in McLean County, 61% of the total in property taxes goes to 13 school districts.

The bills the treasurer just sent out are for 2021. McNeil said property tax due dates are June 6 and Sept. 6. Interest of 1.5% per month will be assessed on late payments. The final date to pay is Nov. 3. All unpaid taxes will be sold at tax sale on Nov. 4.

Taxpayers can mail their payment, pay online, or pay at most local banks. Taxpayers also can go to the downtown Bloomington Government Center to pay in person or use the County Collector’s payment drop box in the Government Center parking lot.
