Illinois State Police said two people were killed and three others were hospitalized following a five-vehicle crash on Interstate 55 near Funks Grove on Friday.
According to a news release from ISP, the crash happened on I-55 southbound near mile marker 151 at about 3:54 p.m. That's just southwest of Bloomington-Normal.
Police said one person was pronounced dead at the scene and another person was flown to a hospital where they later died. ISP said three others were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
The McLean County Coroner's Office identified one of the victims as Kimberly Grey, 65, or Earlville. She was pronounced dead at 5:35 p.m. Friday. Coroner Kathy Yoder said Grey died of head injuries she suffered in the crash. Grey was driving an SUV that was hit by a semi-truck and trailer, according to Yoder. Toxicology tests are pending.
Authorities have not yet provided information about the other person who died.
Southbound traffic on I-55 was closed for hours as drivers were diverted at the Shirley exit. All lanes were reopened at 12:39 a.m.
The crash remains under investigation by Illinois State Police and the McLean County Coroner's Office.
