Candidates for next April's municipal elections have begun filing their nominating petitions.
Two of the three announced candidates for mayor of Bloomington will have a lottery to determine whose name appears first on the ballot. Cody Hendricks and Dan Brady both submitted signatures when filing opened at 8 a.m. Monday. Incumbent Mayor Mboka Mwilambwe did not file early in the day.
There also will be a ballot-position lottery for Ward 9 Bloomington City Council candidates Abby Scott and Roger Bedeker.
In the Town of Normal, incumbent Mayor Chris Koos and town council member and mayoral candidate Kathleen Lorenz filed at the same time. Council member and mayoral candidate Chemberly Harris had not filed as of late morning Monday.
Council member Kevin McCarthy was the only town council candidate to file nominating petitions with the city clerk's office at the start of the week-long filing period. The clerk's office said no other council candidates had filed as of late Monday morning.
The filing period closes on Oct. 28.
The Bloomington Election Commission said the lottery in Bloomington will be held after the filing period closes and before the Nov. 6 deadline. The lottery for ballot position in Normal also will be held Nov. 6, according to the clerk's office.
The consolidated elections will be held April 1, 2025. If necessary, a primary election would take place on Feb. 25, 2025.
