Pedestrian killed in Bloomington shopping center parking lot

A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle Friday afternoon in the parking lot of Empire Plaza Shopping Center in Bloomington.

The incident happened a little before 2 p.m. Police said the person was pronounced dead at the scene in the 1600 block of East Empire Street, near Veterans Parkway.

In a statement released Monday, the McLean County coroner's office said 76-year-old Cherie D. Valentine of Bloomington died as a result of multiple injuries sustained when she was hit by a sport utility vehicle.

The circumstances behind the incident remain under investigation by the Bloomington Police Department, the McLean County Accident Reconstruction Team, and the McLean County coroner. A toxicology test is pending.
