The City of Bloomington gets its drinking water from Lakes Bloomington and Evergreen.

The City of Bloomington says levels of a toxin produced by algae are rising in Lakes Bloomington and Evergreen. The city said in a statement it will be treating parts of the lakes to manage algal growth, starting Thursday.

The city said testing shows the amount of microcystin is well below any level that would require a health advisory.

The algae bloom happened in January because of unusual weather conditions — lower water levels, low precipitation, and warmer-than-usual temperatures.

The city has been using powdered activated carbon to deal with well publicized taste issues in Bloomington water. The algae treatment will help that effort, as well.
