The McLean County coroner has released the name of the pedestrian who was killed in an incident Wednesday on Veterans Parkway in Bloomington.

Coroner Kathy Yoder said Rodney Arbuckle, 57, of Normal, died from head injuries after being struck by a vehicle, according to preliminary autopsy findings.

He was pronounced dead at 7:50 p.m. in the OSF St. Joseph Medical Center emergency department. Bloomington Police said Arbuckle was struck while walking in the roadway on Veterans Parkway between Oakland Avenue and Lincoln Street, where there was no intersection or crosswalk.

"Fatal crashes are preventable, and that was true for this sad incident," Police Chief Jamal Simington said in a statement. "I would like to emphasize that everyone, including pedestrians, has a shared responsibility to do their part to follow the law and safe practices. As a pedestrian walking on streets, it is very difficult to determine how fast a motor vehicle is traveling, especially at night. Also, the driver of a vehicle may not be able to see you in time to yield or stop. Let's all do our part to improve roadway safety in our community so lives won't be lost."

The crash remains under investigation by the Bloomington Police Department, the McLean County Accident Reconstruction Team and the McLean County Coroner’s Office.

The department asks anyone with information to contact Bloomington police officer Jeff Linden at (309) 820-8888.
