The City of Bloomington will launch a new emergency notification system next week to communicate with residents about severe weather, public safety issues and other urgent information.
The free, voluntary program is called CodeRED. It launches Monday. Residents can sign up now.
Residents will be notified of events including, but not limited to, severe weather, water main breaks, public safety issues and more through timely communications. Notifications can be chosen between a phone call, text message or email.
"We know people want information quickly, especially when it affects their family, neighborhood or daily routine," said City Manager Jeff Jurgens. "CodeRED gives us another way to communicate directly with residents during emergencies, road construction, utility work, and other events that may impact their day-to-day lives."
The city said residents can register multiple addresses to learn about situations such as their home or a loved one’s, their place of work or any other area they care about.
In social media postings, the city will also be adding #BloomAlert to identify emergency updates and important information on those platforms. That also starts on Monday.
Information shared by residents will only be used to send the CodeRED notifications and will never be shared or used for marketing purposes, the city said.
The program operates the same way as Normal's mass-communication system, Notify Normal. Town residents can sign up on Normal's website.
