Potential candidates are picking up petition packets from election authorities for next year's city and town contests.

The November election campaign season is just ramping up, but some candidates already are looking ahead to next year's municipal contests.

Like attorney AJ Zimmerman, who said Tuesday he's running for Normal Town Council.

"Normal has the opportunity to expand its collaboration and effectiveness and to avoid the divisive rhetoric that is becoming more prevalent at all levels of government. We can do this by listening to each other, having meaningful, positive conversations, and better understanding the various community perspectives," said Zimmerman.

Zimmerman, who said he hopes to help lead the town through both times of plenty and times of scarcity,  chairs the Normal Planning Commission. He's also on the board of the Miller Park Zoological Society and said he has been active in the business community.

Three at-large seats on the Normal council are up for election next year. They are currently held by Chemberly Cummings, Scott Preston, and Kevin McCarthy. The mayor's office also is up for voter consideration.

Potential candidates in next year's city and town council elections can pick up petition packets.

In Bloomington, the city races will include wards 1, 3, 5 and 9 -- and the office of mayor. The Bloomington Election Commission said no potential candidate has yet picked up a packet from the commission.

Potential candidates also can print forms from the internet, though the commission and the city clerk's office in Normal recommend picking up packets in person.

The candidate filing period is Nov. 16-23.
