A 54-year-old man from Michigan was killed in a Tuesday evening crash on Interstate 55 near Shirley, according to Illinois State Police.

The Kalamazoo resident was the driver of a vehicle stalled in the right lane of southbound I-55 a little before 10 p.m. when it was struck from behind. Troopers said the hazard lights on the man's Ford Explorer SUV were on.

State police said the driver of the Freightliner semi truck-tractor that rear-ended the SUV suffered minor injuries; a passenger was not injured. Both are from Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.

The McLean County coroner pronounced the Michigan man dead at the scene.

Troopers closed the southbound lanes of I-55 for about six hours after the accident and redirected traffic onto Shirley Road. The name of the deceased SUV driver has not yet been released.
