The person who was shot and killed by Illinois State Police this weekend on Interstate 55 near Lexington was identified Monday as 37-year-old Trayvon C. Little of Springfield, according to the McLean County coroner's office.

State Police are conducting an internal investigation into what happened Saturday, as per law. A spokesperson told WGLT they would not release further information until that investigation is completed.

What police have said is they got a call reporting shots were fired at 12:42 p.m. Saturday on I-55 near Lexington (mile marker 178). When troopers responded, they reportedly found two cars pulled over on the shoulder of the highway.

Police say a subject — now identified as Little — was shooting at one of the vehicles, and they began exchanging gunfire.

The county coroner identified multiple gunshot wounds as Little's cause of death. A toxicology report is pending.
